Con You Help Us Out?

5 02 2014

khaaaanWe here at TOG, love gaming cons… Well at least I (Jeremiah) do. Firestone often sulks from afar because most of the major cons happen states–if not time zones–away.

Anyway, while there are some large staples in the gaming con universe: GenCon, Origins, Spiel Con, BGG Con, today we thought we’d make an open place for folks to inform others of the diamonds in the rough. It seems that unless you peruse the bulletin boards at your FLGS you won’t hear much about the local cons in your area.

So here’s where you come in. We’d love to hear from you, especially if you’ve attended a smaller local con that you think is worth checking out–just let us know down in the comments below. Let us know all the vital details: date, location, any special guests, events, and of course cost for admission. Feel free to include links or twitter accounts, and contact info as well. Remember, this is the internet and our readers are spread out everywhere, so don’t hold back–the more cons listed the better!

So sound off, gaming folks: Where do you get your con on?!

Thanks for reading and contributing!

For the UK folk out there: UK Games Expo is probably the most well known & biggest UK con (I know of very few others). It’s May 30 – June 1 this year, in Birmingham. Special guests this year include Chris Barry (Rimmer on Red Dwarf), and Matt Leacock & Reiner Knizia (both of whom I hope need no introduction!). Details on the con’s website:

Eric I attended this con last year (its inaugural year). It was a amazing! Friendly people. Most of the guests were comic or fiction authors/illustrators and I don’t remember their names. There were 1500 people attending through the weekend. Great event.

MidSouth Von in Memphis, TN is a great convention but I haven’t been in a few years because it’s always in the same month as GaryCon in Lake Geneva, WI. GaryCon is pure games and is out on by Luke Gygax, son of the late Gary Gygax, and the Con is held in honor of Gary.

I highly recommend GaryCon.

Geekway to the West.
St Louis, MO
May 15-18
twitter: @geekway

This year is Geekway X, so it’s well established. Starting as a day of gaming in the basement of a guy in St Louis, it’s grown to 4 days of gaming, and will likely be 800-1000 people. Four-day pass is $45 online.

One of the best features is the play-and-win table: Select games from the library will be given away at the end of the convention. The more you play these games, the more chances you have to go home with your new favourites!

While there are a few staple events, such as tournaments for Crokinole, Pitch Car, Peppino the Clown, and Monkey Madness, Geekway focusses on playing pick-up gaming rather than formal events and event-slots.

It’s a lot of fun!

Sounds fun, Timothy!

It is. Over the years, there have been attendees from each of the 50 states. In fact, it’s really easy to get to for you. South on I-25, turn left at Denver to take I-70. Arrive in St Louis. 🙂

Yeah, but you left out the part where I have to drive through Kansas. Zzzzzz……. 😉

That’s the easy bit. Just tie a bungy cord to the steering wheel…
